Help in Buying Auto Insurance

When it comes time to buy car insurance, the decision can be difficult. Considering that people have multiple choices, the most important thing that needs to be done is for the individual to learn everything possible. With knowledge and education, a person could easily avoid being charged outrageous prices or being sold the wrong type of insurance. In addition, since 47 of the States require that drivers have insurance, it is easy to see just how important it is for all options to be understood.

One of the things that would ensure a lower rate for auto insurance is the individual having a good driving record. Obviously, a person without tickets shows the insurance company that they are taking a very low risk. To purchase insurance, the individual would need to locate a reputable insurance agent or company, one that would provide the needed guidance through the buying process but also a professional that would show the person the type and degree of coverage needed.

The insurance policy purchased would be based on a number of things. For instance, auto insurance coverage and price would be depending on several factors that include:

  • Year, make, and model of the car that would be covered
  • Whether the person has a good driving record
  • Number of drivers that would use the car
  • Whether the individual has other insurance policies with the same company or agent, which would result in a multiple policy discount
  • Drivers having a good student record
  • Whether the insured smokes or drinks
  • Safety features of the vehicle

Next, the person needing auto insurance would then discuss the various types of coverage available with the insurance company or agent, which is broken down as follows:

  • Liability With liability coverage, the policy would pay for any accident bodily injury, as well as property damage done to other drivers. The injury coverage would include medical expenses, lost wages, as well as pain and suffering. For the property damage, this would include any damage to the other vehicle or property. In addition, liability would pay for court costs and attorney fees, if needed. The amount of liability insurance needed would be determined by the state in which the person lives. Of course, while there is a minimum amount required for the different states, people could always purchase more.
  • Collision Collision coverage would pay for any damaged to the insured person’s car caused by a collision with another vehicle or object.
  • Comprehensive Also referred to as “full coverage”, comprehensive covers the cost of lost or damage done to the insured vehicle not causing the accident. Typically, comprehensive coverage would include loss from hail, flood, fire, theft, and vandalism.
  • Medical Coverage With medical coverage, all medical expenses, no matter what driver is at fault, would be paid. With medical coverage, the person could add this onto most other types of policies.
  • PIP Personal Injury Protection is required by most states. This type of insurance coverage would pay for medical bills for the insured driver, regardless of which driver was at fault.
  • Uninsured Motorist In this case, the insurance would pay for any damage done to the insured person’s car if he or she were to be in a car accident caused by another driver that does not have liability insurance.
  • Underinsured Motorist If the individual has damages to the car from an accident caused by another driver with insufficient liability insurance, the underinsured motorist would cover
  • Rental Reimbursement With this type of coverage, if the individual needed to rent a car because his or her own car was damaged in a car accident, the charges would be covered up to an allowable daily amount. Rental reimbursement could also be added to other types of insurance policies.
